Climate Change

Queensland's Coordinator General has recommended that the new Winchester South greenfield coal mine be approved in the Bowen Basin.

The Winchester South coal mine project poses significant threats to our region, environment, and climate. We believe that safeguarding our water, farmland, native habitats, and climate should be top priorities for our community and our state.

This mine is completely contradictory to Queensland’s attempts to reduce emissions.

The decision to approve or reject this coal mine now rests with the Queensland Government and The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation.

Take action and email your MP & key decision makers to urge them to refuse the Winchester South coal mine.

Our key concerns regarding the Winchester South coal mine are as follows:

  • Environmental Impact: The Isaac River, which flows into the Great Barrier Reef, is already under substantial stress from mining activities. Whitehaven's proposal seeks to add more untreated water and leave voids that will perpetually pollute the river, endangering our natural environment.

  • Climate Change: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change urges governments to cease opening new fossil fuel projects. Queensland is already experiencing the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, and we cannot afford the greenhouse gas emissions this mine would generate.

  • Environmental Track Record: Whitehaven's history of flouting environmental laws in Australia, including convictions for water theft in New South Wales, raises serious doubts about their commitment to environmental compliance.

  • Habitat Destruction: The Winchester South mine would result in the destruction of vital habitat for the koala and the greater glider, both of which are already endangered species.
